The patent dispute between Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc. escalated after a U.S. judge on Thursday granted both companies permission to add new products to their lawsuits claiming infringement, including the iPhone 5 and the Galaxy Note 10.1.

Samsung and Apple can now seek bans on sales of these products in the U.S. before the latest case goes to trial in 2014. However, both companies haven’t been successful in getting a meaningful ban in the first U.S. case that went in front of a jury and where Apple was awarded damages of $1.05 billion.
